THE STATE OF THE BIOSCIENCES IN NEBRASKA

The biosciences industry sector is defined to include the following subsectors:

Agricultural Feedstock and Chemicals
Drugs and Pharmaceuticals
Medical Devices and Equipment
Research, Testing, and Medical Laboratories

This sector represents high impact to economic growth. Nationally, employment increased by 15.8 percent between 2001 and 2008, compared with a 3.5 percent increase in employment in the overall private sector. On average, employees in the biosciences sector earn higher wages than other industries.

Nebraska's bioscience industry has a specialized employment concentration and is growing. The state has employment specializations in two of the four major subsectors - agricultural feedstock and chemicals and medical devices and equipment. Academic bioscience research and development expenditures totaled $251 million in 2008, led by biological sciences ($114 million) followed by medical sciences ($70 million) and agricultural sciences ($57 million).

THE NEBRASKA BIOSCIENCE ROADMAP IS RELEASED

Bio Nebraska presented the Nebraska Bioscience Roadmap to members and friends at their Fifth Anniversary Celebration. The Roadmap was a partnership between the Nebraska Legislature Natural Resources Committee and Bio Nebraska and represents a five-year strategy to grow the bioscience industry in our state.
